Camp Portfolio...........

Some students have asked for a reminder of the portfolio to be handed in from the camp.

All students will hand in their portfolio at the end of Week 5, Term 4. They will have been worked on during class time but will need time spent on them at home too. Students are encouraged to have specific items signed off as the assignment progresses to be assured of work meeting the required standard.

It is expected that the portfolio will be in the form of a power point presentation. All work will be drafted in draft writing books first and conferenced with the teacher before working on the class computers. Handwritten work may be scanned into the powerpoint. This may be a good way to present the camp layout section.

Final presentations will be displayed in hard copy in the school library.

Each student may choose the level of attainment they wish to strive for.

Achieved Level
• Cover page
• Overview – stating who, what, where, why, when, how
• Diagram of layout and use of the different areas of the camp
• Timetable of each days activities for your team
• Name each of the activities on a separate page…..
- describe the activity
- name highlights and challenges for you
- name challenges you saw others conquer
- use photographs to illustrate

Achieved with Merit
• As above plus…
• include significant personal reflection

Achieved with Excellence
• As above … plus
• Make a positive contribution to ……eg
- Vertical Horizon camp trust
- Our schools next visit
You could decide your own criteria for excellence… or use the following ideas to help. This task must have a social outcome.
 Design a pamphlet for use by Vertical Horizon for publicity
 Design a board (or other) game that could be used by other groups preparing to go or after their camp. This game could be used if campers were inside because of excess rain.
 Make an action plan (including time line) for a possible 2011 camp to assist the teachers and parents in their preparation. This would need to include ideas from this year that we didn’t plan for, ideas that would have been good that we didn’t think of, letters /information for campers or parent helpers…. etc etc

Welcome Assembly

This morning we went to the church for an assembly to welcome the new students to the school. Josh and I have new buddies from MB5. We made some committments to them to make them feel welcome, to help them learn and to support them at our school.

Art workshop.

Jane Lloyd came to school to do an art workshop with us. She showed us how to look at a picture really carefully and get the different parts in the right perspective. Here is a selection of the photos showing us at work. It was an hour of hard work and concentration but we all loved it.

Our Assembly

In week 3 of this term, the Yr6’s in my class hosted an assembly. I was nervous and glad to do the hand prayer with Josh, Jac, Jacob and Ken. Ambros and Amy also had to do a prayer on Perseverance and we listened to Andrew and Braidey read from the Hebrews.
We also listened to a song called “The Climb,” by Miley Cyrus. I thought it was cool because we got to say a prayer in front of the school and organized an assembly with our class.

John Burland in concert

In term 3 of the school year all of the classes from MB1 to MB7 and St Peter Chanel School from Otaki gathered in Grace Hall to meet a man called John Burland. The teachers met him at one of their teachers’ conferences in Wellington and asked him if he could perform for us. He said that he would do a concert for us. The concert went on for about 1 hour and by the time he had finished it was time to go home. I thought about what I enjoyed the most… it was the songs and the reason that I enjoyed them was that the year 7-8 joined in and the actions were easy enough to do.

Maths Week

Last week was maths week and we went onto the maths week website and played some maths games. We had to get passwords and log on for ourselves. There were games and quizzes to play. My favourite game was splatter. You can even earn money to spend if you work really hard.

Technology this term

We have a great technology teacher this term in technology room 19. We are making a pencil case but it more interesting than a normal one. We had to have a partner, mine is Casey. One is the designer and the other is the stakeholder. The designer gets to design what ever the stakeholder wants it to look like. They decide how big and what fits in it. I am the designer and Casey wanted a bunk bed. Then we switched roles and she drew the design I wanted – a truck. We finished our designs and gave them to the teacher. I wonder what we will do next time.

Last week some kids from MB2, MB3 and MB4 went to Artsplash at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington. We travelled by car and most people found it hard to get a car park. Once I got in I walked to gate 31 to meet up with the other people. I was getting nervous about how big the crowd was. As soon as we walked through the doors …… wow, the crowd was huge. We got ready to sing “Heal the world” by Michael Jackson. After most of the songs were finished, we had a cool guy on xylophone and drums. He was very talented. The conductor came back and told us with her hands to stand up. We sang “Alleluia”. I learned that the way to avoid being put off by the crowd was to really look at the conductor and pay attention. The next song was “Waterloo” and it was one of my favourite songs. It was a great experience to have.

Yesterday a professional artist called Jane Lloyd came to our school. Some of us from our class were asked to help set up in Grace Hall. It took a while to put out the newspaper, papers and felt pens. But we had it done in time. The Yr 4, 5 and 6 groups went first because we were going to technology. When we got back it was our turn for the art.
The workshop was very hard but very, very awesome fun and interesting. At the end everyone’s work looked so different. Jane showed us how to dye her one so we can try that later. She was really cool and I think everyone in the school enjoyed have her come. She made it challenging by making us work and think faster.
Casey
This term we have been doing “Jump Jam”. It’s when you have some songs and have to learn some dance moves to go with them. Eugene has been working with us to learn them. He is very cool and energetic too. I love doing it because it’s a good way to do lots of exercise and its fun to do with other people. I also love the music. Some of us are going to Linton to a Jump Jam workshop and we are all very excited. We leave school at 11.00 and don’t get back until 3.30.

Our Social Studies topic for the term.

At the beginning of the term our class started doing research on the Kapiti Coast. We were looking at the boundaries and we decided the Otaki River to the north and Paekakariki to the south would be the area we looked at.
We had to describe the area, then take our own street and describe that. We put the published copy on the wall with the map of the area. We had to find where our homes were and put a pin with our name on in the right place. That was quite hard for some of us.
We also talked to our parents about where they worked and they worked out of the Kapiti area. We asked them about why they chose to live here too. Some live here because they have their wider family here, some because they looked us up on the internet and liked what they saw. There were lots of reasons.
We know that lots of people travel to Wellington and to Palmerston North to work but they like to come back here in the evenings and weekends.
We are now starting to ask questions about the history of Kapiti. We know some of the streets are named after people who were important here. That’s our next challenge.
Tamara

Wow what a catch up!!!!!!!!!!!

We haven't been near the blog since the beginning of the term. Now we are writing reflections to catch up.You will see that we have been doing lots of cool stuff.

Skool Stars

On Wednesday during week five our class (MB3) gathered in Grace Hall to be filmed dancing where Mr. Elms, a few parents, and Mrs. Gerlich were assembled with the woman and man that were to film us. While the couple introduced themselves to us, we immediately sat down before a pair of microphones. The skool stars team instructed us to sing our dance song (Don’t Stop Moving). After we had sung the song through a few times the first dancing group (group 1) started to find their places on the stage. Behind a green screen we lined up in single file ready to walk onto the stage and perform our dance. Confidently group 1 started their dance and before you knew it, it was group 2’s turn. I thought that group 1’s moves were very funky but group 2’s moves were also quite impressive. When group 2 had finished, group 3 was called up. Starting in a semi circle, they began their dancing. Our dance was finished! It was so fun and we enjoyed ourselves a lot.

Netball

On Friday afternoons the A and B teams have netball practice for the next day’s game. We play four Quarters, fifth teen minutes in each Quarter. Just before the practice is over our team always play against the A team so we know what it feels like when we come against a hard team we might win against . In the B team grade were 2nd equal and when we lost we only lost by one. In our team we have eight people, Two year eights two year sevens and four year sixes. Michaela plays goal defence and goal keep, Lucy plays center and wing attack, Bridget plays goal shoot and goal attack, Nikita plays wing attack and center, Amy plays goal attack and goal shoot, Sophie plays wing defence and I play goal defence, wing attack, wing defence and goal keep. When Michaela went on holiday our team got easily beaten because we through away the ball too many time when we got an intercept.

Taking the telescope home

On the night I took the telescope home it was so cold. Mum, Dad and I had to dress up in our jackets before we went outside.
The moon was hazy, so too much magnification meant it would be blurry. First we tried 22HM and found it was way too blurry so we tried 15HM and that was just right.
After looking at the moon we tried to find Saturn. We knew what we found was a star because when we put all the magnification on it was just a blue dot.
Finally we found it. We saw dots around it so they must have been its moons. Mum was the most keen to look. I had to position it so that Mum could see it when she looked.
Dad was the one who gave up and went inside first because he was too cold. He made the hot chocolate drink for us. He thought we were frozen ninnies for standing out there for so long on a freezing night.

New look display boards!

One of the parishioners from St Pats has spent some time making frames for the display boards in our corridor. They look so much better now and we are able to put up some neat work from term 1.
